BNSI Lauded As A ‘Beacon Of Excellence’

“A beacon of excellence in Barbados” is what the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) is being regarded as, by its parent Ministry.

This accolade was showered on the department by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Business, Kevin Hunte, as he addressed the start of BNSI’s Visibility Conference, at Courtyard By Marriott, Hastings, Christ Church, on behalf of Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins.

Held under the theme Pioneering Quality Fifty Years Forward, the conference was aimed at providing management and staff with an exceptional opportunity to reflect on the BNSI’s journey and contemplate its future trajectory.

Permanent Secretary Hunte, noting the organisation had set the bar high, and its impact resonates far beyond Barbados’ shores, stressed that the theme underscored the need to recognise the BNSI and nation’s pioneering spirit.

He pointed out that it had consistently led the way in advocating for and implementing international standards that ensure the quality, safety, and sustainability of products and services, ensuring that the country has a good reputation.

“I would like to re-emphasise the critical role that the Barbados National Standards Institution plays in the transformation of Barbados, in stimulating economic growth, and in offering strategic quality solutions to the economic challenges that our nation faces. The BNSI, over the years, has been instrumental in developing and implementing national standards and contributing to the quality that Barbados holds dear,” he said.

Acknowledging that the journey had been marked by resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the cause of standards and quality assurance on the island, Mr. Hunte stated: “Since its establishment in 1973, the BNSI has played an instrumental role in shaping our nation’s industrial landscape, facilitating trade, and ensuring that Barbados remains a trusted provider of high-quality goods and services, not only locally and regionally but also internationally.

“It has been a source of guidance and inspiration for industries across the landscape of our nation,” said Mr. Hunte, further noting that quality is the cornerstone of any thriving economy and was a testament to Barbados’ commitment to excellence and its dedication to meeting the ever-evolving needs and expectations of customers, worldwide.

He highlighted that in today’s globalised world, where competition is fierce or rough, adherence to international standards and the pursuit of quality is not a choice but indeed a necessity. “It is the very essence of our competitive edge,” he stated.

BNSI staffers heard that the Ministry remains fully committed to collaborating with that department to develop and implement energy standards, which would promote sustainability, efficiency, and the transition to renewable energy sources and resources.

The Permanent Secretary also pointed out that the energy landscape was evolving and standards remain vital to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of these changes and innovation.
